Experience and Background

Robert Trettin graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a BA in Political Science.  He minored in Business Economics and further supplemented his studies with graduate courses in business marketing.  Prior to entering the private sector, Mr. Trettin served first as the Senior Land Use Policy Advisor to the Deputy Mayor of the City of San Diego.  He then served as the Chief Policy Aide to the Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, again with an emphasis on land use.

After leaving government service, Mr. Trettin entered the private sector with his own small business specializing in the area of government relations and project development. For almost two decades, The Trettin Company has represented homeowners, commercial property owners and businesses in the process of obtaining discretionary permits from government agencies.  Since its inception, The Trettin Company’s permit processing actions have included work with such government agencies as the County of San Diego’s Department of Planning and Land Use, the California Coastal Commission, the California State Lands Commission, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and numerous city governments. 

Mr. Trettin’s responsibilities have included:

  • Assistance in hiring and supervising technical consultants

  • Oversight on project design / technical report preparation

  • Directing marketing and public affairs activities

  • Planning and budget analysis

  • Representing applicants before public agencies and elected officials

  • Representing applicants / project before local planning groups

  • Obtaining all necessary permits and Assisting in the execution of all permit conditions

  • Project management

In this capacity, The Trettin Company has successfully assisted in planning and representing more than $400 million in residential, commercial and industrial development projects seeking discretionary government permits. On many projects, he has partnered with Soil Engineering Construction, Inc. to secure permits for our clients and to act on their behalf.

With close to 30 years experience in land use planning in both the private and public sectors, Bob Trettin continues to offer his clients a unique blend of land use regulatory knowledge and the ability to communicate effectively with the agency staffs and public officials wielding discretionary authority over land use decisions.
